MANTECÓN WINS IN HIS GRAVEL WORLD CUP DEBUT
Last weekend the SCOTT CALA BANDIDA traveled to Italy, to the Piemonte wine region, to compete in the first round of the UCI Gravel World Series, the Monsterrato.
The debut of Sergio Mantecon in Gravel has been all over the place. The bandit won the general classification after the final sprint a few meters from the finish line.
The fast circuit, starting and finishing in the town of Quattordio, winds through all the small villages and towns north of Alessandria to Asti for 125 km, completing a route with 1750 meters of elevation gain full of curves and country roads.
Despite not starting in the leading group, Mantecón quickly managed to climb positions to place himself in the leading group from the first kilometers. He remained in that group throughout the race, pulling the group on numerous occasions.
However, the race would not be decided until the final stretch, where the bandit would win the overall classification after the final sprint a few meters from the finish line.
This is a great result for the team not only because it was the first time that Mantecón competed in the UCI Gravel World Series, but also because it was his first gravel competition.
Next goal of the UCI WORLD GRAVEL SERIES on September 18 in Ranxo.
Next race: Spanish XC Championship on September 11 in Cantabria.
